How is the bird now? This is not actually a rare bird, it is a very common kingisher in West Malaysia, commoner than the "Common Kingfisher" which is common in Europe but not very common in Malaysia. This bird is known as "White-throated Kingfisher", local name is "Pekaka Belukar", it is widely found in habitats with food supply, other than fish, they also feed on lizards, snakes, small mammals and even small birds, sometimes they will also hunt for flying insect. The broad diet has allow them to live far away from water source, they can even be found in gardens, parks and urban cities with a bit of green cover. I have not seen this bird in Kampar UTAR, but they are very much heard at the pool near the canteen during my only visit there, their call is diagnostic, is like a loud laughter. They are uncommon but can occasionally be seen here in PJ UTAR at drains. I have kept one injured bird before with fish before it gets better and flew away.
